How to make your website discoverable in ChatGPT and Google's AI search

AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini explained, with practical checks for website owners.

How to make your website discoverable in ChatGPT and Google's AI search

AI search can give people a composed answer with links to supporting sources. This creates another way to discover a business website. There is no universal setting that guarantees a company will appear in ChatGPT or Google.

The key idea

Accessible pages, clear answers and verifiable information are more useful than guaranteed GEO claims. Measure AI visibility carefully rather than drawing conclusions from one prompt.

Different products and surfaces

ChatGPT can use search and show links to web sources. Google's AI Overviews provide summaries in search results, while AI Mode supports more detailed exploration. Gemini is also a model family and a separate app; its interface is not interchangeable with Google Search.

Focus on the customer's actual path: where they ask, whether they see a link and whether they visit. An assistant answering without web search may produce a different result from one using current sources.

What Google requires

Google describes standard SEO principles as the foundation for AI Overviews and AI Mode. A page needs to be indexed and eligible for a search snippet to qualify as a supporting link. Eligibility does not guarantee inclusion.

Google does not require special AI markup or a new text file. Start with accessible pages, internal links and useful text. GEO can be a convenient label for this work, but it does not imply a separate secret ranking mechanism.

What to check for ChatGPT

OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot as a crawler for search discovery, while GPTBot relates to content that may be used for model training. Their settings are independent. Allowing one should not be treated as automatically allowing the other.

Check robots.txt, CDN protection and server responses. Access removes a potential obstacle; it does not guarantee citation. Change crawler policies deliberately, based on your website's objectives.

Make content a useful source

Answer specific questions directly. Explain who provides the service, what is included, where you operate and what supports your conclusions. Comparisons benefit from explicit criteria and limitations; case studies need verifiable details.

Instead of “the best AI solutions”, describe which enquiries an agent handles, when it hands over and how quality is checked. This helps a reader regardless of whether a search system cites the page.

Evaluate results with care

Keep a small set of questions about your services and periodically test different wording. Record the date, interface and links. These observations describe individual answers, rather than total visibility: context and results can change.

Also examine attributable visits and relevant enquiries. Distinguish a brand mention, a website link, a visit and a lead. A claim of stable AI placement without those distinctions is misleading.

Start with a customer's real question

A hotel owner might ask for a bilingual guest assistant that escalates uncertain answers. Useful source material explains languages, documents, actions, human handoff and ongoing costs.

Make the answer specific enough to check. Describe what the service actually supports and distinguish a working case from a hypothetical example. Claims without conditions can be repeated incorrectly by an assistant. Do not invent a local office or universal capabilities. Accurate business information helps both prospective customers and systems that retrieve material from the web.

Prepare a verifiable page

Keep important descriptions in accessible page text, with clear structure, relevant links and current conditions. A polished image alone cannot explain the service's scope.

Support factual claims with appropriate sources and real case evidence. State what was measured and what remains unknown. An appearance in an AI answer does not prove ongoing traffic or sales. Keep translations aligned when prices or supported actions change. Conflicting language versions make the offer harder to interpret and undermine a customer's ability to compare suppliers.

Observe systematically

Prepare a small set of customer questions and record date, product, language and whether web search was used. Repeat observations under comparable conditions instead of relying on one favourable answer.

Track mentions, links and accurate descriptions separately. A company name without a source link differs from a cited page, and either can still describe the offer incorrectly. Treat results as observations, not stable guarantees. Keep a history and look for actual referral traffic or enquiries where available. Interfaces, sources and answers can change.

What an AI-search service should deliver

Agree on accessible pages, better materials, technical repairs and a documented observation method. These deliverables remain reviewable even when an assistant does not choose your site.

Ask what GEO or AEO means in the proposal. A fashionable name, file or markup does not explain a requirement; the contractor should identify the documented system and purpose. Begin with priority questions and a bounded stage. The lasting assets should be clear conditions, useful articles and evidence of experience, rather than a promise to place the company permanently in every model's memory.

What to check

  • Check indexing and accessibility of useful pages.
  • Review OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot rules separately.
  • Provide clear answers, authorship and verifiable details.
  • Track observed links, visits and relevant enquiries.
